Lítore Quartet: Selkie

diciembre 18 @ 19:00 21:00

«Selkie»: An opera for saxophone quartet. With the support of INAEM.

A collaboration of Lítore Quartet and Brais González.

Lítore Quartet presents Selkie, a project in which this young group explores an innovative format of musical and scenic work in the field of chamber music. Brais González, the composer of the work that gives its name to the programme, has defined it as a ‘scenic tale for saxophone quartet’. The visual and narrative component of Selkie is strengthened through the use of voice-overs, live declamations, the use of stage space, costumes and lighting. The four members of Lítore assume a hybrid role between musicians, actors and narrators, constructing a unique audiovisual experience.

Selkie takes us to one of the most fascinating stories of Celtic mythology, inspired by the Atlantic coasts of Scotland and creatures that look like seals but are able to adopt human form. With a background based on the ideas of freedom and emancipation, the narrative evolves between the land and the sea, represented in the stage space, and through 4 characters: Ailsa, a Selkie forced to live out of the water; Duncan, a sailor in search of a wife; Lachlan, a companion of Ailsa’s seal group; and Callum, a northern fulmar, Lachlan’s friend.

Aaron Siebert’s The Sobbing of the Phoenix and William Albright’s Pypes introduce the theme of Celtic mythology in the first part of the programme. Both works include explicit references to the bagpipes, one of the main instruments of Celtic music, which will bring us progressively closer to the Scottish waters, where Selkie’s story begins.
